A country fence...

Taken on the grounds of The Salem Cross Inn in West Brookfield, Massachusetts, where we had lunch with my brother Rob while he was visiting earlier this month.

My son and I went to see Star Trek, The Next Generation last night on the big screen at our local cinema Cinemagic.  What fun!  If you are any bit of a Trekkie, I would recommend it if it comes to a cinema near you.

Italian fence...

Here's a little fence on the property of Villa Miragalli where we spent a heavenly week.  It kept us from falling into the sea after drinking that wonderful Italian wine.  Just one of the Villa's many charms.

Some Fences…

I am wondering what this poor tree did to deserve being fenced off from all the other things in the area.

While this particular fence between the trees is just standing there for no good reason really.

While watching this ghost car speed by, I realized that the fence across the way is there to keep other cars from falling into the Quaboag River.

And I am off tomorrow to Syracuse, New York.  Our son Evan is graduating this weekend from Syracuse University with his Masters Degree in Information and Library Science.  The last two years have sped by much like that car in the photo above.  We are very proud.

Unfriendly fences…

Some fences have a friendly look about them and some do not.  These particular fences are ones I’ve picked up along the way that seem like they are adamant about keeping people at bay.
Well, whatever…I didn’t want to go there anyhow.

Baseball and Friday Fences…

For many in baseball September is a month of stark contrast with April, when everyone had dared to hope. If baseball is a lot like life, as pundits declare, it is because life is more about losing than winning.
  ~John Thorn

What does this quote have to do with Friday Fences, you might ask.  Well, I sat here this morning thinking about baseball and wanting to put up some photos of fences here on my blog to link up to Friday Fences.

In baseball, of course, the fence is an important part of the game.  Some players desperately “swing for the fences” when their team is down.  There is even a play by August Wilson about baseball called Fences.  Fences are important in baseball.

And I’m thinking about baseball today because today is the Boston Red Sox’s home opener.  They have gotten off to a pretty sorry start and I am hoping that today they decide to turn things around.  But regardless of how the Red Sox do, I will watch them all season because I am first and foremost a baseball fan and secondly a Red Sox fan.  In baseball, you take the bitter with the sweet.

And that is much like life.

On our trip this week out to Deerfield, Massachusetts, Carrie and I drove around some beautiful countryside and saw some wonderful country homes.  I managed to take some pictures of a couple houses in Historic Deerfield.  These are really gorgeous, old, well kept houses behind these fences.  But we also saw a couple of properties that were not so well kept.  The contrast between April and September, I guess.

And for good luck, I am including one of my photos of Fenway Park's Green Monster...one of the world's most famous baseball fences.
  Good luck, Red Sox!

The fence up close…

I decided to get a little up close and personal with my favorite fence this week.  This is the fence by the turtle pond that holds the horses in and helps to keep them from coming into our yards and pooping on our grass.  It’s one of my favorite things around because it consists of a little of this and a little of that in great fence-y cooperation.  It kind of represents how I wish we were with each other in this world…a bunch of ragtag, unmatched pieces strung together to do something worthwhile.

Fence Friday: Take me home, country roads…

On our recent trip to Roanoke, Virginia (USA), we got off the highway and did a very nice stretch of road in West Virginia (WV State Rt. 259, I think) before we got on the Blue Ridge Parkway.  I saw lots and lots of fences along the way on that road and on the Blue Ridge Parkway.  I’ll post the ones I like best today.

The John Denver song “Country Roads” kept going through my mind as we traveled down through West Virginia.  He calls it “almost heaven.”  They call it “wild and wonderful.”  I just call it beautiful.   There is another place I need to get back to with my camera and time to spare.

And, of course, the Blue Ridge Parkway is just one of the most extraordinary country roads in the whole USA.

So here they are…fences along some country roads.

Either in Virginia or West Virginia
