A Good PEI Fence Revisited…

Around this time last year, Greg, Olive the pug and I took a wonderful drive up to Prince Edward Island and stayed in a beautiful cottage.  Behind the cottage was a field of Queen Anne’s Lace held back by a rustic fence.

After we returned to our hum-drum lives, I believe I threatened to blog about the Queen Anne’s Lace at some length.  Well, knowing how way leads on to way, I never did manage to get back to it.  There were so many less-traveled roads to go down.  (Sorry, Mr. Frost!)

Today, because I haven’t spent a lot of time with my camera since my return from Ohio and consequently don’t have recent fences to post, I have gone back into my archives and am pulling out a few pics from PEI of that fabulous field of Queen Anne’s Lace held back by that rustic fence and here they are.

Believe it or not, I have many more photos on my hard drive of these flowers and that fence.  It was such a beautiful sight.  Well, despite that fact that way leads onto way, I may well be unable to resist taking the road back.

Good Fences Keep Out the Riff-Raff...

"Hey, Whitey, what the heck is that down there?"

"Well, Henry, I think it smells like a Pug!"

"Sure enough, y'all.  It's a pug."

"Thanks goodness for fences."

Good Rockefeller Fences…

One of the things I like best about photography is that it allows one to time travel.  That’s what I’m going to do today.  I’m going back to August 28 of this year, when Greg and I were in Maine visiting our friends, Linda and Brian Friedmann.

Linda and Brian own a camp on a beautiful lake in Maine not too far from Acadia.  We were lucky to get to spend a couple nights with them on our way home from Nova Scotia.  We were also lucky that they happened to have four tickets to the opening of the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Garden in Seal Harbor.  This garden is open to the public only once a week in late July, August and early September, so we were very fortunate to get to go.

I don’t think much needs to be said about the beauty of this place so I will let the photos do the talking.

The walls that surround the garden were spectacular in their own right.  For my purposes here, I’m going to call them fences, because that’s really their function and it allows me to hook up with Theresa’s Good Fences.

Bugs on plants and one good fence…

I was looking around at the photos I’ve taken in the last couple of weeks and found that I have been taking a lot of shots of bugs.  There’s a bear and a bobcat roaming around our neighborhood, but I am only getting bugs.  Oh, well…guess I’m hanging around in the wrong places.  But since that’s what I’ve got, I will post a few bugs today.

One problem with bugs is that they refuse to be fenced in.  Still I want to participate in Good Fences on Theresa’s Run*A*Round Ranch Report so I am also posting one good fence.  This fence is there to keep people from driving into Quaboag Pond in Brookfield, Massachusetts.  It seems to be working for that, but it would do nothing to keep the bugs out or in.

Good Raggedy Fence…

We have a fence in our neighborhood that is a bit on the tattered side.  It is made up of a little of this and a little of that.  Seemingly held together by rust, bits of vine and spider webs.  It may look a little raggedy, but I’m glad it’s there.

This fence has a job after all.  And it’s to keep precious beings like this safe and sound

Good simple fences...

Dropping in on The Run*A*Round Ranch's Good Fences today.  Here are a few I managed to catch this past week.

Here's a simple country fence.  I'm not sure what it's keeping in or out.

This one seems to know what it's meant for.

And you don't see this everyday.  It serves to keep the dogs safe from escaping out the window, but it does nothing for the noise control.  Cute little buggers, aren't they?

A Study in Contrasts…

I’m joining the fun over at TexWisGirl’s Good Fences today.

Here are a couple of fences I’ve come across in the last couple of weeks.

This first one is not too far from our house and I pass it often in my travels.  It surrounds a beautiful estate.  It’s graceful and well-kept.

This second one here I found in Worcester, Massachusetts one day when I had to scurry over there for an appointment.  What the story is there, I have no idea.  But with the razor wire and the sneering face, it doesn’t look too welcoming.

It’s a curious thing that while the first picture is more appealing in many ways, the second one is much more interesting to me.  What do you think?

Multi-tasking Friday…

I decided to kill two birds with one stone today and participate in Friday’s Fences and in A Rural Journal’s Random 5 Friday.  Damn, I’m good…

Taken last year in Charleston, South Carolina
My Random 5

1. I found out earlier this week that Worcester, Massachusetts, which is the closest city to where we live, has received the dubious honor of winning The Golden Snow Globe Award for being the U.S city with the most snowfall this winter measured in inches.  At 108.9 inches, they beat out the runner up Syracuse, New York by about 12 inches.  Yes, it’s been one of those years…

2. When I’m on Facebook at four in the morning, I’m always amazed that I’m not the only one.  You people need to get some sleep!

3. I looked out the window this morning to see turkey tracks in the snow.  That made me smile.  You know, their feet are almost as big as my hands.

4. I miss my cats terribly.  But it is not time to replace them yet.  Well, special little beings that they were, they can never really be replaced, but you know what I mean.

5. I am currently involved in a discussion group about Voluntary Simplicity using the curriculum from the Northwest Earth Institute.  This week, one of the things we talked about was multi-tasking and how it is not necessarily such a good thing.  But apparently, old habits die hard.

Snowy fences...

My daughter Carrie and I took a little jaunt out to North Adams, Massachusetts for a little overnight in the very cool Porches Inn.  The real reason for our trip was to spend a day at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA).  Here's a nice snowy fence scene we saw along the way...

Now that's a fence....

Scrounging around in my archives for a fence to post today, I came across this photo that I took while in Capri, Italy.  At the time I took this photo, I remember standing there and wondering  whether or not I would be in much better shape or much worse shape if I had had to navigate those stairs every day.  There seemed to be a school at the top so mostly there were youngsters climbing down.  But just the thought of all that climbing right now makes my knee scream in agony.  Hopefully, once fully recovered, that will not be the case.  But in the meantime, it's a good thing I am living in the relative flatness of Central Massachusetts.

A country fence...

Taken on the grounds of The Salem Cross Inn in West Brookfield, Massachusetts, where we had lunch with my brother Rob while he was visiting earlier this month.

My son and I went to see Star Trek, The Next Generation last night on the big screen at our local cinema Cinemagic.  What fun!  If you are any bit of a Trekkie, I would recommend it if it comes to a cinema near you.

Fences for Friday…

Here are a couple of fences I came across on our recent trip out to Ohio…

I have no idea where we were when I took these photos.  It was a whirlwind trip to celebrate Greg's brother Jeff and his wife Lisa's 25th anniversary.  We sped out to the Akron area from Massachusetts in one day and back in one day.  Whew!  But the kids went with us so the driving was not so bad.  And there's something kind of nice about being cooped up with the kids for 12 hours straight.  We play games and talk.  So what if we are all adults??  We have fun.  And I am a firm believer in looking out the window while you are tooling along.  You never know what you might see.
