Outsquirrelling the squirrel…

I am so pleased to report that the squirrels have still not figured out a way to get to the birdfeeder I hung up earlier this year.  For a while there, I thought that having a squirrel free birdfeeder was an impossible dream but I am here to tell you that it can be done.

So without the squirrels eating us out of house and home, we have gotten a nice array of birds back to the feeder and in our yard.  But I have to admit that I bang on the window whenever I see a blue jay on the feeder.  They can wipe the food out almost as quickly as a squirrel can and the other birds don’t seem to want to be in the same neighborhood as they are.

Yesterday I put the long lens on my camera and took a few shots of our visitors.  Here they are:

Black-capped Chickadee

Grackle.  He is the king of all he surveys.  And yes, we still haven't taken down those blasted Christmas lights that don't work.

The American Robin.

The lovely female Cardinal.

Mr. Goldfinch almost has all his summer clothing on.

The Juncos are still here.

Not real long. I have a Nikkor 55-300mm. Long enough for me right now. Yes, it is shameful that those darn lights are still up! I agree.

You must be a genius! Squirrels are very hard to out-squirrel!

Nice variety of birds. I know what you mean about the blue jays, they are food hogs and can get mouthy too!

These are beautiful photos Barbara. How did you outsquirrel the squirrel?? I don't put out sunflower seed, just niger, as the little red squirrels love sunflower seeds. I even bought a steel silo feeder but although they can't destroy the feeder they still eat the seed and tease the dog! lol

I had a brainstorm in the middle of the night one night. We have a farmer's porch on the front of our house and I thought if I could hang the feeder between two of the columns that hold it up, they wouldn't be able to get to it. So far it has worked. Believe me, they haven't stopped trying but not success so far. I keep thinking one day they're going to be coming around with a ladder.

You've gotta be the first person I've met who has been able to keep tree rats at bay! I hope it lasts. :-) Your photos are gorgeous, Barb! Don't worry about the lights...not everyone appreciates a good Griswold decorating job!

so glad you highlighted a female cardinal, if I had all the time in the world, I would make one out of glass... the males are everywhere ;') I am in the midst of a pice that features three butterflies. A commission of hope and peace. Happy Easter
