Oh, the humidity…

After three days of rain, Olive and I were happy to wake up to sunshine this morning.  It would be a good day for picture taking for a change.  Off we went and here’s what we saw.

There is a great abundance of Jewelweed around.  Here’s what I can tell you about it.  It’s also called Spotted Touch-me-not.  Hummingbirds love it.  The juice from the stem is said to relieve poison ivy and athlete’s foot.  How about that?

It’s obvious that the bees love it.  Here’s a bee going about his morning business among the Jewelweed blossoms.

Here’s an interesting plant called Lady’s Thumb.  It’s not the flower that gives it its name.  There is a dark green splotch in the middle of the leaf that supposedly resembles a lady’s thumbprint.

This little beauty is a plant that for many years I thought was a common dandelion.  Seems I am wrong about that.  This is either a Rattlesnake Weed or a Two-flowered Cynthia.  I really want it to be a Two-flowered Cynthia because I think that is a very nice name, but I fear it is a Rattlesnake Weed.  I have to take a better look at its leaves the next time I spy one.

And of course, the woods are full of White Wood Asters now.  I read that the young leaves of this species can be cooked and eaten as greens.  Problem is, how do you know when they are young?

There are signs of fall in the woods these days, but I’m not complaining.

Within an hour of returning to the house, the sky clouded up again and the sun was gone.
  Olive and I got lucky.

You did a beautiful job capturing these blooms! The jewelweed is beautiful looking, and I love the bumble bee digging in.

I thought that the rattlesnake weed reminded me of what we call smart grass in these parts. It seems similar. Glad you were able to get out for a walk before the rains returned. We keep waiting for rain that never seems to get here, but goes all around and now I know another place it went !

I just love these little blooms you captures and the side notes of what they are. Good timing Barb and Olive! :)

i know Olive loved her walk with mommy... these are beautiful, the first one is gorgeous and i like both of its names. Jewelweed is so appropriate because it looks like jewels. tell that bee he needs to go on a diet or find a bigger flower. LOL

Rattlesnake weed - there is just something about that title that says "run!" because my math equals 'where there is rattlesnake weed this is probably rattlesnake' - just saying!

and then there is your new header. Now THAT is what I call a fabulous close-up on a web.

Yes...seems like an abundance of rain lately...we had very heavy rainfall for 2 days...glad you and Olive got out and were able to capture flowers and sunshine for these lovely images.
We have plenty of Jewelweed around...now I know what it is!

Beautiful photos, Barbara. I often wondered what that jewel plant was. It's growing in the field next door along with lots of other weeds and wildflowers. I think we got some of that rain here Monday. It poured steadily from mid-afternoon until Tuesday morning. Sunny and very windy here today then more rain for tomorrow.

Enjoyed learning a bit about the name of some weeds/flowers that I'd never heard before. Thanks for sharing.
