1. Our bird feeders had been squirrel-free since
November 25th of 2011. On that date, I had
finally figured out a way to keep those little devils from cleaning out our
feeders. I know it was that particular day because I
wrote a blog-post about it. Well, the
day before yesterday our squirrel-free streak came to an end and the snow is to
blame. The evil geniuses finally figured
out that they could climb up on that massive pile of snow in front of our house
and take the foot-wide leap to the feeder.
I hate to rain on their parade, but it is going to be warming up here
this weekend and that jump is going to get wider and wider and eventually they
will have to go raid someone else’s feeders.
But, you know, it’s been a tough winter.
I guess I can’t begrudge them a little suet to tide them over until they
can find their nuts.
Thinking, thinking..
Making the approach...
Success!
2. We’ve gotten a nice variety of birds hanging
around this winter. My favorite so far has been this red-bellied
woodpecker.
3. I have been feeling pretty bad for Olive, the
pug, in this weather, so today I let her out the front of the house to give her
a little more room to find the proper spot for her very important business. It took her 285 pug circles and three tries
before she finally decided on a spot.
She looked so relieved when she was finished.
Where's the grass?
Ahhhhh....
4. Who’s watching Grantchester
on Masterpiece Mystery? I guess it's over for now. I am sorry they’ve
only made six episodes. I am
hooked on British mysteries. I guess
that’s because I fell hard for Agatha Christie, Dorothy Sayers, Ngaio Marsh and P.D. James
when I was younger and never let go.
5. Looks like we’re in for a long stretch of
snow-free weather and temps into the 40s coming up. Yay! I
hope you all have a pleasant snow-free weekend.

yay for warm-up! and melt-off! olive is too cute.
Hope it does indeed warm up for u Jeanne! That is a lot of snow!
Oh my those little squirrels can be quite industrious and clever. I actually feed them myself.
That's a great shot of the woodpecker. Just loved seeing Olive the Pug, she's so cute but she does seem to be wondering where the grass went. Hope you get some nice weather to enjoy.
That squirrel doesn't look like it's missed too many meals! Olive is too cute. I once had a Golden puppy born in the winter who didn't know what grass looked like. When the snow finally melted, she was really confused about where to go to the bathroom.
Squirrels are such a nuisance but I know they are hungry this winter with all the snow. I have 2 reds that feed on the droppings regularly. Nice pic of the red bellied woodpecker! I'm glad the warm up is coming, finally. We haven't had one thaw this winter! Enjoy.
You certainly got a good shot of that pesky squirrel and I almost expected to see him leaping in the air, Barbara. Yes, the snow is melting a bit here in Nashua as well, finally. I agree with you on Grantchester and enjoyed its limited Masterpiece Mystery run. And, yes I agree with you on British mysteries being such fun.
awwwww, poor, sweet olive!!!
same boat here!!!!
My husband says squirrels are just rats with bushy tails, which may be true, but I do like them anyway! You got some great shots here!
Beautiful photos! Red-bellied Woodpeckers are one of my favorites! I've been battling the tree rats all winter.
We're hooked on British mysteries too. And our dog goes back and forth forever til she's found just the right position (while I stand waiting for her in the -20 temps).
Your pug Olive is a cutie! I also love the Red-bellies and all the other woodpeckers. Great shots!
Tell me, did you watch Foyle's War? If not, you might give it a try. We have watched the mysteries for years, and love them all....we really liked Grantchester, too. And did you see Worrickers I think it was just this past year? It was different but good.
The reason I ask about Foyle's War is the name threw me off and I did not even check it out the first year or two...happened on it and didn't realize what I was watching...and it is one of our favorite mysteries we have ever watched.
Poor Olive....we had a dachshund and used to have to shovel her a spot or two---she was too short for anything.
I feed the squirrels, but honestly, there are only a couple or three that come regularly, unless it is bitter, bitter cold. What frustrates me is the cowbirds and starlings.
$1 All God's creatures need to eat.
#2 Great shot.
#3 Get Olive some shoe shoes, she will be fine.
#4 Not I.
#5 Thank goodness!

Sweet squirrels! I LOVE Grantchester!!! Did you know that they were made from short stories?
I'm sending you an email about them.
ha, 285 pug circles :D poor girl! those squirrels are smart and i loved the photo series of them...pretty shot of the woodpecker...thank you for linking and enjoy your stretch of snow free weather!!
hubby and i loved the story from 2011 and the one from today. smart squirrel.. great story and i love the snow pics of Olive.. hope her grass returns soon.
Poor Olive, my kids are the same. When the grass returns they will probably not know what to do. Great shots of the squirrel and the woodpecker. Always wondered why they call it a red-bellied when the red is on his head?? We are looking at 50's for next week, so it will feel more like Spring will be arriving after all!!
The squirrels will be so disappointed when the snow melts. :)) How nice the temperatures will soon be in the 40s!
Those squirrels are certainly persistent! And opportunistic. Poor Olive. Reminds me of the time it snowed in Dallas and our chihuahuas circled so many times it made ME dizzy! lol Yay for warmer temps. Loved your photos.
Nice pics in the snow. Cheers..
Beautiful post.
Warm regards:)
I see that in winter leaves you too :)
