Keeping a sharp edge…

What really knocks me out is a book that, when you’re all done reading it, you wish the author that wrote it was a terrific friend of yours and you could call him up on the phone whenever you felt like it.
  That doesn’t happen much though.

~J. D. Salinger, A Catcher in the Rye

J. D. Salinger said it much better than I could although it seems to happen to me more often than it did to Holden Caulfield.  Because I sure wish I could call George R. R. Martin, Haruki Murakami, J. K. Rowling, Neil Gaiman, Terry Pratchett, Henning Mankell, Kate Atkinson and the list goes on and on and on and on…although I would be too tongue-tied to say anything that made sense.

Sometimes, I'd rather call the characters!

Me, too! I have a list that I would call--Sue Grafton, Meg Gardiner, Lee Child . . .

My mom said the same thing to me yesterday -- only it was because the book she read didn't meet with her expectations. :)

Visiting from Tuesday Muse...was attracted by your photo. I always need a good book waiting for me! So many authors I'd just want to say "thank you" to for making me look from a different perspective!

I know that I often want the story to go on because I'm not quite through - be that a talk with the author or as someone suggested, a call to the characters.

great quote and I'm with you here. We've a fantastic book review program where the Host has 4 authors a week who've just published a book and he gets to ask questions that I think most of us readers would like to ask from the source, so much better than book reviews by readers for me anyway..still it isn't calling them up after we've read their book is it ;-) nor are they friends too bad.

I feel naked if I don't have a book I am reading...I need books like the flowers need sunshine. That being said, I have no desire to meet most authors because like you say, I would be too tongue tied to say anything.
